About Us

At Ouseburn Village Store (OVS) we have a passion for three things:

Service excellence ; Product excellence ; All things Yorkshire

We have a store, café and post office you can visit in Great Ouseburn which is also the source of the River Ouse that flows into York.

Originally built in 1799 and still retaining many of its late Georgian/early Victorian features, the shop has always been part of the village. We believe it has been a butchers, drapers, tannery and leather workers and more latterly an independent grocery store/farm shop, post office and brand new licensed café.

Just three families have owned and run this property in the past 100 years and we are lucky number three!

I am Nik and my wife is Lesley and together we bought this property in May 2023 and completed a full renovation during 2024. The shop floor is brand new, as are the Georgian bow windows and door. We have retained the original ceiling, ceiling hooks and wooden posts that had height marks of family members from 100 years ago etched into them!

We levelled the rear yard to create step-free access from the road and discovered a 7m deep well. This is now a feature inside our glass sided pergola with a louvred roof which seats up to 16 people for the café.

We have a fantastic local Chef and an oustanding, very special OVS team who see to your needs when we are in full café service from Thursday to Sunday. All of our staff are very local to the area and should be able to answer any questions you may have. Outside of full service, that we have light bites, coffee and cake Monday to Wednesday.

Our core values are:

Supporting local artisan Yorkshire producers ; being kind to the environment and being rooted in and supporting our community.

We prioritise organic and/or locally sourced fruit and veg, local high welfare meat, MSC accredited fish suppliers and British Lion rated eggs from local Yorkshire farms.

That's all waiting for you if you get the chance to visit us!

And if you do visit us, where are you going to stay? We have a holiday cottage at the rear of the shop called Hideaway Cottage. You can see more about that by clicking Airbnb

Now, if you are reading this, you are probably looking at our newly created online shop offering. We decided that some of our postable, non perishable and local artisan items were just too good to keep to ourselves so, have a browse around and let us know what you think!
